Su Kwak bringing light, grace and healing ....
Exploring the subject of light in her paintings Su Kwak
makes abstract landscapes that feel excavated.
She physically cuts and stitches her work in a way that also opens the
work further to the viewer. Using many
layers of paint makes her work evoke a special power.
Originally from Korea, Su Kwak has lived for many years in
the USA, originally studying in Texas at the University of Saint Thomas. She finished her masters at the University of
Chicago.
Looking at the paintings of Su Kwak immediately makes me
tune into and share her memories of moon and water, waves and mountains. The cutting and stitching involved in their
construction enlivens the work. Her work glows with a spiritual intensity that
is a message of healing.
